Kansas SUN Bucks provides $120 per eligible school-age child for summer grocery purchases. The program is administered by the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF). Kansas started accepting applications in early 2026 and DCF began sending text message reminders in March 2026 to households that had previously applied.

Who Qualifies for Kansas SUN Bucks

Kansas uses a specific age window: children must be ages 7 to 17 at any time since July 2025 to qualify through the SNAP/TANF pathway. School-enrolled children have a broader pathway as well.

Automatically Eligible — Notification Letter Sent by DCF

Kansas DCF identifies eligible households and sends a letter (and text messages to prior applicants) — households that receive a letter do NOT need to apply.

Pathway 1 — Food Assistance (SNAP) or TANF: Children aged 7–17 in a household where someone received Kansas Food Assistance (SNAP) or TANF at any point since July 2025. These children are eligible regardless of school type — including homeschool, virtual school, and private school. DCF should automatically identify and notify these households.

Pathway 2 — Free or Reduced-Price School Meals: Children enrolled in a Kansas school who were approved for free or reduced-price school lunch (FRSL) at any time since July 2025. These children may receive SUN Bucks automatically, with DCF sending a notification letter.

Pathway 3 — Kansas NSLP School Enrollment + Income: Children enrolled in a Kansas school that offers the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) or School Breakfast Program, whose household income meets the federal guidelines (185% FPL for free/reduced-price meals). These families typically need to apply.

Pathway 4 — Foster Children in DCF Custody: Children in the custody of the DCF Secretary who are enrolled in a Kansas school are automatically eligible for SUN Bucks. However, relatives, non-related kin, and foster homes must submit a SUN Bucks application for children in their care after April 1, 2026.

Did Not Receive a Letter? Apply Online

If your household did not receive a letter from DCF after January 2026 and you believe your child may be eligible, apply through the DCF Self-Service Portal at dcfapp.kees.ks.gov by 5:00 PM August 31, 2026.

How to Apply for Kansas SUN Bucks

Step 1 — Check for Your DCF Letter or Text

Kansas DCF began sending letters to auto-eligible households after January 2026, and began sending text message reminders in March 2026. Check your mail and your phone for DCF SUN Bucks messages. If you received a letter, you are identified as eligible and do not need to apply.

Step 2 — Apply Through the DCF Self-Service Portal (If No Letter)

If you did not receive a letter and believe your child qualifies:

  1. Go to dcfapp.kees.ks.gov
  2. Create a DCF Self-Service Portal account or log in with your existing credentials
  3. Select the SUN Bucks application
  4. Complete the application with your child’s information, school, and household income
  5. Submit before 5:00 PM on August 31, 2026

Step 3 — What You’ll Need

  • Child’s name, date of birth, and Kansas school
  • Household size and monthly gross income
  • Kansas Food Assistance or TANF case number if applicable
  • Your mailing address — the Kansas Benefits Card will be mailed here

Step 4 — Receive Your Benefits

Households identified as automatically eligible receive a Kansas Benefits Card (or benefits loaded onto an existing one) in summer 2026. Application-approved households receive benefits on a rolling basis after processing.

How Kansas Delivers SUN Bucks

Kansas calls its EBT card the Kansas Benefits Card — all SNAP, TANF, and SUN Bucks benefits load onto this same card. SUN Bucks benefits will be:

  • Added to your existing Kansas Benefits Card if your household has one
  • Loaded onto a new Kansas Benefits Card mailed to your home if you do not have an existing card

Update your mailing address at (888) 369-4777 or through the online portal at EBTcards.dcf.ks.gov if you’ve moved.

Kansas’s Outreach Challenge — Why Applications Matter

Kansas has had challenges reaching eligible families. In 2026 (2024), the application window was very narrow — just two months — and more than 138,000 eligible Kansas children missed out on benefits. Kansas advocacy groups noted that approximately 60,000 more eligible children could be auto-enrolled if state data systems were better integrated.

For 2026, Kansas enlarged the application window to seven months (applications accepted from January 2026 through August 31, 2026) and DCF proactively sends text message reminders to prior applicants. Share this information with other Kansas families — awareness remains the biggest barrier to enrollment.

Where to Use Kansas SUN Bucks

  • Farmers’ markets that accept SNAP/EBT across Kansas
  • Convenience stores with SNAP authorization
  • Online grocery ordering at Walmart and Amazon Fresh where EBT is accepted

Kansas SUN Bucks follow SNAP food rules — eligible for most SNAP-approved groceries; not for hot prepared food, alcohol, tobacco, vitamins, or non-food items. See the SNAP eligible foods guide for what qualifies.
