Pennsylvania SUN Bucks — Summer EBT Eligibility, Income Limits & How to Apply

Last Updated: June 2026 Source: USDA & state agency guidelines (FY2026)

Pennsylvania SUN Bucks provides $120 per eligible school-age child for summer grocery purchases, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) in coordination with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Pennsylvania is one of the latest-distributing states in the country — SUN Bucks benefits for 2026 will be distributed beginning around mid-August 2026, long after most other states have already issued benefits.

The application deadline is August 31, 2026. Applications received after August 31 are held and considered for summer 2026 benefits — not 2026.

Pennsylvania’s Mid-August Distribution — Why It’s One of the Latest

Pennsylvania is consistently one of the last states to issue Summer EBT benefits each year — distributing around mid-August 2026. Most other states begin in May or June. Pennsylvania distributes through the end of September each year.

Why so late? Pennsylvania’s distribution window runs from late May through end of September — benefits are issued on a rolling basis throughout this window. Auto-enrolled children who were automatically identified earlier in the year may receive benefits sooner in the window. Application-approved children are processed throughout the summer and fall.

Despite the late start, Pennsylvania’s full distribution window means families who apply in August can still receive benefits with 122 days of usable time.

Who Qualifies for Pennsylvania SUN Bucks

Pennsylvania’s eligibility navigator at pa.gov helps families determine whether they need to apply or are automatically enrolled.

Automatically Enrolled — No Application Needed

Your child is automatically enrolled if they:

Had qualifying free/reduced-price school meal eligibility during 2025–2026 school year through:

  • Direct certification — from SNAP, TANF, or Medicaid with qualifying income for NSLP
  • Categorical eligibility — homeless, foster child, migrant, runaway, or Head Start status
  • Household application — approved free or reduced-price school meals through the school

These pathways are verified directly between PDE and school districts, enrolling most eligible children automatically.

Must Apply — Specific Group Only

Pennsylvania’s application is for a specific and narrow group:

Your child attends an NSLP school and does not qualify for free or reduced-price meals based on direct certification, categorical eligibility, or a household school meal application during the 2025–2026 school year.

Use the Eligibility Navigator on pa.gov to determine if you need to apply before submitting an application.

Income Eligibility Lock-In

Pennsylvania has an important income rule: if you were determined eligible for SUN Bucks, free or reduced-price school meals, or SNAP, TANF, or Medicaid at any point between July 2025 and end of summer 2026, you remain eligible even if your income later increases. However, if you apply via application, you must be eligible per income guidelines at the time of application.

How Pennsylvania Delivers SUN Bucks

For families with an existing EBT card: SUN Bucks benefits are automatically added to the family’s existing EBT card “if possible” — meaning if SNAP, TANF, or other benefits are already issued through a Pennsylvania EBT card, SUN Bucks goes onto the same card.

For families without an existing EBT card: A Summer EBT card is mailed to your address on file.

Pennsylvania’s 19-digit card: Pennsylvania’s SUN Bucks card uses a 19-digit card number — longer than the standard 16-digit EBT card used in most states. When activating or calling about your card, enter all 19 digits. Use only the last 4 digits of your ZIP code when prompted for verification (not your SSN).

Card replacement: Call the Statewide Customer Service Center at 1-877-395-8930 or visit a County Assistance Office.

Theft protection: Pennsylvania recommends using the lock/unlock feature available on all EBT cards through the ConnectEBT mobile app or connectebt.com — a different app than the ebtEDGE used in many other states.

How to Apply for Pennsylvania SUN Bucks

Step 1 — Use the Eligibility Navigator

Visit pa.gov/agencies/dhs/resources/summer-ebt and use the Eligibility Navigator to determine if your child is automatically enrolled or if you need to apply.

Step 2 — Apply Online, via COMPASS, or In Person

Online: Apply through the SUN Bucks website at pa.gov/agencies/dhs/resources/summer-ebt

Via COMPASS: If you have an account with Pennsylvania’s COMPASS portal (Pennsylvania’s online benefits platform for SNAP, Medicaid, and other benefits), you can apply through COMPASS and submit questions there as well

In person: Complete a paper application at a County Assistance Office — Pennsylvania has County Assistance Offices in every county statewide

Step 3 — What You’ll Need

  • Child’s name, date of birth, and Pennsylvania school
  • School’s NSLP participation status
  • SNAP, TANF, or Medicaid case number (if applicable)
  • Household size and monthly gross income
  • Mailing address (important: make sure it’s current)

Step 4 — Application Timeline

Apply by July 1 → Application processed for consideration in summer 2026 distribution (rolling basis from late May through September)

Apply July 1–August 31 → Processed for 2026 benefits; receipt timing depends on processing speed

Apply September 1 or later → Application held and considered for summer 2026 — you will NOT receive 2026 benefits

“You can apply at any time during the year” — Pennsylvania explicitly allows year-round applications, but applications after August 31 go to the next summer’s benefits.

COMPASS — Pennsylvania’s Benefits Portal

COMPASS (commonwealth.pa.gov/compass) is Pennsylvania’s unified online benefits management platform for SNAP, Medicaid, CHIP, and other programs. Pennsylvania SUN Bucks applications can be submitted through COMPASS if you already have an account. COMPASS also allows you to submit questions about your SUN Bucks case and check application status.

CEP School Note for Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania notes that children attending Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) schools may still qualify for SUN Bucks, but CEP enrollment alone does not automatically qualify. Families at CEP schools should use the Eligibility Navigator to determine their specific situation — eligibility depends on whether the child is directly certified, categorically eligible, or qualifies based on a household application.
