— administered by the Wyoming Department of Family Services (DFS). Wyoming’s LIEAP has a uniquely modern application model in this series: all applications are submitted online only through the dedicated portal at lieapwyo.org. There are no in-person application counters or paper applications for the standard heating assistance program.
Wyoming LIEAP is also distinctive for its RV/camper eligibility: residents who live in permanently parked RVs or campers are eligible for heating assistance — a provision documented in DFS materials and uncommon among the states in this series.
What Does Wyoming LIEAP Cover?
Seasonal Heating Assistance — monthly bill payment assistance toward the primary heating fuel for the home (natural gas, electricity, propane, coal, wood, and other fuel types). LIEAP pays toward the fuel your heating system burns, not the electricity needed to operate the furnace blower. If approved, LIEAP pays monthly until the entire seasonal benefit is exhausted or through May 31, whichever is sooner. Benefit range: $48 minimum to $1,901 maximum. Benefits go to households with the highest primary heating fuel costs. Program period: October 1 through April 30.
Benefit payments:
- Regulated fuels (natural gas and electricity): payments made directly to the utility for bills dated on or after November 1
- Unregulated fuels (propane, pellets, wood, coal): payment made directly to the fuel vendor or, in some cases, to the household with receipts required
Winter Crisis Assistance — emergency help for households facing a heating crisis: utility shutoff notice, empty fuel tank, or broken furnace. Maximum: $1,100. Available year-round (opening October 1). Crisis benefits can be requested through the lieapwyo.org portal or by calling DFS.
Weatherization Assistance (WAP) — free home energy efficiency upgrades. Maximum: $15,000. LIEAP and WAP use a joint application — applying for LIEAP at lieapwyo.org automatically refers you to the Weatherization program. WAP applications accepted year-round online.
“LIEAP pays your primary heating source monthly” — unlike most LIHEAP programs in this series that issue a one-time lump sum, Wyoming LIEAP pays monthly until the seasonal benefit is exhausted or through the end of May. This monthly payment structure is distinctive among the states in this series.
Online-Only Application — lieapwyo.org
Wyoming LIEAP is unique in requiring online-only applications for heating assistance. The DFS LIEAP program explicitly states: “Applications for winter heating bill assistance are accepted online only from October 1–April 30.”
Steps to apply at lieapwyo.org:
- Visit lieapwyo.org and click “Apply Now”
- Create an account (Registration Guide available at dfs.wyo.gov); takes under 10 minutes
- Complete the LIEAP application including household information and income
- Upload required verification documents as PDF, JPEG, or PNG files (maximum 5 MB each) — name files with your last name and document type
- Track application status in the portal — approval or denial notifications appear there
The portal is the same system used for the Housing Assistance Fund (HAF) and Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) if you’ve used those before.
RV/Camper Residents Eligible
Wyoming LIEAP explicitly includes residents of permanently parked RVs or campers as eligible applicants. From the DFS LIEAP page: “Benefits are available to homeowners and renters, including if you live in an RV/camper that is permanently parked.” Provide verification that the RV or camper is permanently parked at a fixed address when applying. This provision is uncommon among the 50 states in this series.
